Work with our interns

LHSI pays for the intern, and you provide the experience. The intern works with you 10 hours a week from late August to early May. We can accept a wide range of projects and work within the life and health sciences realm. 

We provide support for interns as they navigate the year and communicate with you on activities and deadlines. You'll have a site visit with the director in the fall to check in. There is an internship showcase in April for the interns to present their work. 

We have a competitive professional development grant available for interns to join you at a conference or national professional meeting, and we provide a list of other ways to fund your intern if you would like to hire them after the internship period.

Our interns are full-time second- or third-year IU Indianapolis students. Interns apply during their first or second year of college, so we provide extra guidance as they navigate what is usually a first professional job.

What we do during the application process:

• Encourage applicants to visit career services for assistance with the application, resume, cover letter, and mock interviews. This starts the career education and development relationship early.
• Pre-screen applications in mid-March and send you a short list of applicants to interview in April.
• Manage the matching process based on feedback from you and the applicants. We send matches in May so that you have the summer to plan for an August start.

What we do during the internship year:

• Complete hiring paperwork and program orientation with the interns.
• Hold periodic online discussions with interns to reflect on their experiences as a group. While the individual internship sites are different, interns are often having similar professional growth experiences.
• Visit each internship site once in the fall to check in and discuss progress and learning. We also have you complete evaluation forms to track growth and start feedback conversations with your interns about professional skills.
• Have office hours for interns to stop by and ask our team questions about navigating professional situations. Our ambassadors are former interns and are happy to help with issues or questions.
• Facilitate the completion of the intern electronic portfolio (ePortfolio) to help interns document their learning and growth. This is a great record of their learning and can be a resource for recommendation letters and drafting future personal statements.
• Prepare interns for the internship showcase, including how to communicate across audiences with different levels of knowledge of the internship work.
• Share other funding sources and ways to keep your interns beyond the year. Each intern is eligible for one year of LHSI, but there are other programs and opportunities on campus if you want to continue working together. This is a great opportunity to train interns and then give them more responsibility and independence beyond the LHSI year.
