Have any additional skills specified in the individual internship postings
Transfer students are eligible after being at IU Indianapolis for at least one semester (must have an IU Indianapolis GPA at time of application).
International students are eligible if they have authorization to work on campus. All on-campus job policies for international students apply to this internship.
The internship experiences are as diverse as the locations in which they are offered. We have projects spanning bench and clinical research, hospital and clinical research administration, health education, public health, and science writing and communications. Available projects are listed on the Apply for LHSI page when applications are available. Previous intern poster descriptions offer excellent insight into the types of projects former interns have been involved with—these can be found on the showcase page.
Our internships are currently a mix of in-person and virtual. This varies by internship site and campus policies on working in person.
An internship with LHSI is a paid position in which IU Indianapolis undergraduate students engage in relevant work experiences within a professional area of study. Interns are encouraged to apply their academic experience to real-world problems and to develop critical skills in various areas of research and professional work. The National Association of Colleges and Employers sets the baseline for the criteria and definition of an internship.
LHSI internships are not “busy work” jobs for students. They offer an opportunity for meaningful exposure to professional fields at an undergraduate level.
Yes! Interns are paid $13 per hour for up to 10 hours per week as IU student hourly employees. The pay is hourly based on hours logged on a time sheet, and paychecks are paid biweekly. Interns are hired as hourly workers subject to all IU HR policies and federal and state employment laws.
We will use work-study funding if you have it, but it is not required. As a work-study student, you will receive a biweekly paycheck just like any other campus job.
The program has averaged nearly 200 applications for 75 internship spots over the past two internship cycles. You must meet the basic requirements and submit the application on time to be considered. We recommend you apply at your earliest opportunity (usually the spring of your first year at IU Indianapolis) to allow another year of eligibility if you don't get in on your first try.
The most successful applicants have utilized campus career services for assistance in putting together the application materials.
LHSI interns are hired as IU Human Resources temporary student hourly employees. Any policies and documentation requirements relevant to being hired into that type of hourly position applies to LHSI participants.
International students are eligible to apply for LHSI if they are eligible to work on campus. All on-campus job policies for international students apply to this internship. If you have questions about those policies, please check with the Office of International Affairs.
Students with DACA paperwork are eligible to apply.
Program logistics
The internship begins in late August and ends in early May. Some sites may choose to hire students under other funding after the internship ends.
Interns work a maximum of 10 hours per week, usually during 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. The typical intern works 6–10 hours per week. Check your schedule to make sure you have those hours available, preferably in a few blocks of time each week, before you apply for the program.
Hour requirements or restrictions are specified by the supervisors in the project descriptions listed on the application website.
Most LHSI sites are located in the health-related graduate and professional school buildings on campus or in the hospitals on and near campus.
Dress code is specified within the project description for each location. This is available during the application period. Generally, the dress code is based on laboratory safety or professional dress for those in clinical settings.
The online application is available from late January to mid-March. You must complete the application in full, including the attachment of a resume and cover letter, by the deadline stated on that page.
Program application
Preliminary screening will be made on the basis of completed applications (application form and resume) submitted by the applicants. Only complete applications will move forward for screening.
Review the minimum requirements and additional requirements of each location carefully. It is your responsibility to demonstrate on your application that you meet all of the minimum requirements to be considered. Failure to do so will result in your application being rejected.
You will receive a copy of your responses by email when you submit (this is your confirmation it was received) and one additional email after the due date to inform you of when application decisions will be made. If you don't receive the email, please contact lhsi@iu.edu to make sure your application was received.
Selected applicants will be invited for interviews. Being selected for interviews is not a guarantee of admission to the program.
Applicants selected for the interview process will meet with at least two internship sites. Supervisors and applicants will meet for an interview in a timely manner and will submit feedback to the LHSI director.
Matches are made based on feedback reviewed by the director. Additional interviews may be assigned in the case of a nonmatch based on feedback and at the discretion of the director.
Final matches are released upon review of spring grades in mid-May.
The deadline is during the week before IU Indianapolis spring break. The exact date is listed on the application page.
You are encouraged to submit your application at least a week before the deadline. Late applications are not accepted.
The application asks for credits you've already completed. Put the number found on your IU Indianapolis transcript, as that counts any accepted transfer credits.
Don't worry if your credit hours are high enough for you to look like a senior. We also ask for when you think you'll graduate and determine qualifications based on that.
If you are currently dual enrolled at IU Indianapolis and either Ivy Tech or Butler University to reach full-time status, that's ok! The application will ask your current credit hours at IU Indianapolis. If you select 0–11, another question will appear to ask if you're also enrolled at Ivy Tech or Butler University to reach a minimum of 12 hours this semester.
Make sure you have completed every field of the application and have attached a resume. PDF documents are the most ideal and Word documents are also acceptable. Avoid image files like .jpg or .png. If you're still having problems submitting the form, please contact lhsi@iupui.edu.
You will receive an email at your @iu.edu email address as soon as your application is received. If you don't receive an email, contact lhsi@iupui.edu to make sure it went through. There are no extensions for applications that did not submit properly.
We highly recommend you have someone in your school's career planning office check your resume and cover letter. IU Indianapolis Career Services has a list for contact information by school.
Appropriate references are former supervisors, professors, academic counselors, advisors, peer leaders, or anyone who can speak to the quality of your work. They are usually happy to act as a reference, so just ask them! Inappropriate references include friends and family members. We do not ask for letters of recommendation, just contact information.
Unfortunately, no. LHSI is its own specific program, and we work with the sites listed. If you are looking for other internship opportunities, please visit your school's career services office or check out JagJobs for more information!
