Apply to LHSI

Join our yearly group of 75 interns and work on a professional team in our graduate and professional programs on campus and in hospitals near campus. You'll work up to 10 hours per week during the school year. Experiences are as varied as the over 70 different internship locations, and you'll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in health and science projects. This is also a great way to grow your professional network.

IU Indianapolis students are increasingly diverse across multiple identities, and LHSI has a great opportunity and responsibility to ensure that future health and science professionals represent the communities they serve. We particularly encourage students from underrepresented backgrounds to apply.

Qualifications

You can apply for our internships in the spring of your first or second year at IU Indianapolis for internships in the fall and spring of your second or third year. Transfer students must have completed at least one semester at IU Indianapolis prior to applying.

This program is for IU Indianapolis students only, and you must be enrolled full time. Transfer students are eligible after completing at least one semester at IU Indianapolis. Students co-enrolled at Ivy Tech to make full-time enrollment are also eligible.

Your coursework comes first, and we don't want to affect your grades. Beyond clearing the minimum requirement, decisions are not made based on GPA. Transfer students must have an IU Indianapolis GPA.

To get the most out of this program, you'll need to commit to 10 hours per week for working at your internship site. Some sites are flexible, but you can expect to need about 10 hours a week for work during the academic year.

We do not have summer positions available.

The sites in our program look for a wide variety of majors. We're looking for any student interested in exploring life and health sciences careers.

Effective July 1, 2024, students in Purdue programs will still be eligible to participate in LHSI as hourly employees, but they will not be eligible to use work-study funds for LHSI. Eligibility may change for the 2025–26 year and beyond.

Participation in LHSI requirements and activities, including professional development workshops, reflection assignments, and community-building events, will help you grow professionally.

What goes into an LHSI application?

This process is meant to be like any other internship or job application. Getting help relevant to your major or career field is really important because each field is different. There is no "right" answer to the application pieces other than doing it in the way that you would for your future career. We expect that you will work with your career services office or the Office of Student Employment to determine what skills and experience to highlight across your materials and what sections to include on your resume.

The LHSI application has a few parts. You will need all of these to apply to LHSI:

Contact information for two professional references.
Short answer question responses.
One resume.
If you are enrolled in some Ivy Tech courses to reach full-time student status, we may request proof of enrollment to reach the minimum 12 hours for full-time status.
