Apply to our program

Join our yearly group of more than 100 interns and work with internship sites in our graduate and professional programs and hospitals on campus. You'll work up to 10 hours per week during the school year. Experiences are as varied as the over 100 different internship location options, and you'll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in health and science projects. This is also a great way to grow your professional network and work with professors and staff right on campus.

IU Indianapolis students are increasingly diverse across multiple identities, and LHSI has a great opportunity and responsibility to ensure that future health and science professionals represent the communities they serve. We particularly encourage students from underrepresented backgrounds to apply.

Applications for the 2026–27 group are now open and are due by Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at 8 a.m. Search all internship listings in Handshake, and apply using the Microsoft form linked at the bottom of this page. We strongly recommend you review the qualifications and resources below before completing the application.

Qualifications

You can apply in the spring of your first or second year at IU Indianapolis for internships in the fall through spring of your second or third year. Transfer students must have completed at least one semester at IU Indianapolis prior to applying.

You must be currently enrolled as a full-time IU Indianapolis student. Transfer students are eligible after completing at least one semester at IU Indianapolis. Students co-enrolled at Ivy Tech to make full-time enrollment are also eligible.

LHSI is open to IU Indianapolis students. Purdue in Indianapolis students interested in similar opportunities should contact studentlifeindy@purdue.edu to explore their options.

Your coursework comes first, and we don't want to affect your grades. Transfer students must have an IU Indianapolis GPA.

GPA is not used for selection purposes, only as a minimum to be considered.

You'll need to commit to 10 hours per week to work at your internship site. Some sites are flexible, but you can expect to work about 10 hours a week from Monday through Friday to gain the maximum benefit from your experience.

The sites in our program look for a wide variety of majors and skillsets. All students interested in applying their skills and major to life and health sciences careers are welcome to apply.

Many majors can lead to a career in life and health sciences fields. Our past interns represent over 40 different majors and minors across most of the academic schools on our campus.

About the application

Our application is a Microsoft Office Form that requires you to sign in using your @iu.edu email address and IU log-in credentials. Review the pages below to learn more about the parts of our application and prepare a draft before submitting in the form. All applications must go through this form; we cannot accept applications directly through Handshake.

This program is meant to help you expand your network to professors outside your school. As you select internship sites, be aware that you will not be placed with departments in your own school: public health, data science, and health services management students should choose locations outside of the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health. Health sciences and kinesiology/exercise science students should choose locations outside the School of Health and Human Sciences. The location of the internship is listed in the Handshake description for each site.

LHSI taught me what it really means to work as part of a team that cares about both the science and the people behind it. I learned how to ask better questions, communicate clearly, and stay calm when experiments or plans didn’t go the way I expected. Those moments reminded me a lot of what medicine requires: patience, curiosity, and the ability to keep learning. The confidence and problem-solving skills I built there are things I’ll carry with me into every patient interaction and every challenge in my medical career.
